Overview
Due to changes in the oral environment, bite cross (penetration) can occur in the scanning result of the bite. The software provides a solution to satisfy dentists' needs. Automatic bite optimization can modify the occlusion status after scanning the bite and limit the bite cross value. Dentists can apply this feature to various dentistry types to realize an ideal treatment.
Why will bite cross occur?
Bite cross is a phenomenon in the teeth of the maxilla and the mandible penetrates at some parts of the scanning model in the section mode. In the color bar mode, negative values can be detected in these areas. Besides, the phenomenon is extremely common on all oral scanners. The areas of the bite cross are presented in purple. Bite cross is a kind of digital phenomenon, instead of a real situation. Hence, it is better to eliminate the bite cross areas, which the bite optimization function in the IntraoralScan can realize.
The reasons why bite cross occurs in the scanning process are sophisticated. In general, bite cross is subject to these factors:
- The differences between the tightness of the bite on the right side and the left side;
- Sink of periodontal mucous membrane;
- The periodontal ligaments can change the teeth position slightly under tension;
- Degrees of loosening of teeth, etc.
However, some dentists prefer to refer to the bite data with bite cross. Therefore, IntraoralScan also provides a comprehensive and detailed control solution for users.
How to optimize the bite data?
In Settings > Scan Settings > General, click the box in front of the “Automatic Bite Optimization” to turn it on or off. The function is enabled by default. When users double-click it, a pop-up will require users to determine a maximum bite cross value in the interval of 0-0.3mm according to their needs. Click “confirm” to finish the setting.
We recommend users turn it on and set the specific values according to the local requirements or needs. After turning it on, the function will be effective in the next bite scan.
Tips: Maximum bite cross value
By default, the feature can limit the maximum bite cross value to 0.02mm. When users set a value from 0-0.3mm, the actual maximum bite cross value is the set value + 0.02mm. The bite cross will be limited in this range.
After scanning the bite, the software will automatically adjust the contact status of the jaws, eliminating the most bite cross. Users can find a bouncing action of jaws after scanning the bite data, indicating the optimization computing.
Although a few bite cross areas remain, users can check the contact distance in the color bar mode. The distance can be limited to the actual maximum bite value. For example, here is 0.02mm.
If the function is disabled, users can still enable this function by clicking the little icon after scanning the bite.
