Adjust Bite Contact

Overview

Splints have a certain thickness that may impact the patient's bite. To mitigate this, CreSplint 2.0 offers a range of tools to facilitate the adjustment of bite relationships. This document primarily presents the use and strategies of visualization tools and virtual articulators.

How to adjust the bite contact of splints?

STEP 0: Adjust the mouth opening

The software also includes an average virtual articulator to adjust the jaw relationship without Metismile.

Click the virtual articulator and specify a value for the mouth opening. Then, the mandible will be opened in a hinged motion. In this case, it is essential to pre-determine the thickness of the splint.

STEP 1: Check the static bite

During the shaping stage, users can activate the static detection function to verify the static bite. A ribbon will display the bite contacts. These collision areas may interfere with proper occlusion and should be removed.

STEP 2: Adjust the static bite

Remove collision areas on splints by clicking “Static bite adjustment”. The software will automatically trim the splint according to the contact situation. However,  the minimum thickness will be limited to 0.6mm.

STEP 3: Simulate dynamic bite

The other function of the virtual articulator is to simulate dynamic bite. First, the tooth model is placed on the occlusal plane. Users can freely drag the arrows to move the model. The occlusal plane is defined by the intersection angle between the Bonwill triangle and the occlusal plane, which is 26º. Two blue regions above the plane represent the condylar processes and fossae. The distance between the centers of the condylar processes is 110mm, based on the human average.

Next, users can modify the parameters of the articulator.

  • Anterior condyle guidance inclination: 0-60, 30º by default
  • Lateral condyle guidance inclination: 0-30º, 15º by default
  • Side shift: 0-2mm, 1mm by default

STEP 4: Check the dynamic bite

In the virtual bite movement, users can choose the protrusive, left lateral, and right lateral movement and click the play button to display the simulation animation.

Enable dynamic detection to find the dynamic contact points.

The real-time detection can show the contact point changes in the dynamic bite process.

STEP 5: Adjust the dynamic bite

Remove new collision areas of splints by clicking “Dynamic bite adjustment”.

STEP 6: Modify the shape

Apply the carving tool to modify the splint shape.
